Are Blogs Overrated for Shopify Success?

I hear this question constantly from Shopify store owners: do I really need a blog?

The answer is no. Not every store does. And for many merchants, the time spent writing mediocre blog posts would be better invested in product page optimization, technical SEO, and structured data markup.

Skipping the blog is a contrarian take in the content marketing world. But I have worked with enough Shopify merchants to know that a blog is only valuable if you can commit to doing it well. A neglected blog with thin content is worse than no blog at all.

The Blogging Assumption

The conventional wisdom says every Shopify store needs a blog for SEO. More pages, more keywords, more chances to rank. In theory, that is correct. In practice, many Shopify store owners do not have the time, expertise, or budget to produce blog content that competes.

If you are writing a 500-word post about “how to choose the right widget” and there are already 200 posts on that exact topic from established publishers, your post is not going to rank. You have created something that generates zero traffic.

That time could have gone into making your product pages exceptional.

Product Page Optimization Is the Better Investment

Your product pages are where purchases happen. Product pages are also where you have the most unique content opportunity. Nobody else has your exact products with your exact descriptions.

A well-optimized product page includes unique descriptions written for your specific buyer (not manufacturer copy), customer reviews that add user-generated content, optimized images with descriptive alt text, and complete structured data markup for rich results.

Rich snippets showing price, availability, and ratings take up more visual space in search results than a plain blog listing. Rich snippets also get higher click-through rates. For a commerce site, this is often a better use of SEO effort than blogging.

Technical SEO Delivers Without Content

Site speed, mobile rendering, clean URL structure, proper internal linking. These technical fixes are all SEO improvements that benefit every page on your site without writing a single blog post.

I have seen Shopify stores grow organic traffic from technical fixes alone. Compressing images, implementing lazy loading, cleaning up redirect chains, and adding proper schema markup. No blog required.

How AEO and structured data change the blog question

A shopper can ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google’s AI Overviews which product to buy, and the answer draws on what the web already says about that product, which makes the product page and its structured data part of the answer. Google says there is no special schema and no extra file a site needs to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and the same fundamentals apply, pages Google can crawl, helpful content, and a good page experience (Google Search Central). For a Shopify store that puts the product page, with complete product schema for price, availability, and reviews, ahead of a blog post written to fill a calendar. A blog post earns its place in those answers when the post answers a buyer’s question better than the pages already ranking. Before deciding where the next hour goes, I would run a search discovery audit to see where the store shows up in Google and the AI assistants.

When a Blog Does Make Sense

I am not anti-blog. I run a content company. Blogs work when you can commit to quality and consistency. If you can publish useful content on a regular schedule, content that your target buyers search for and that you can make better than what already exists, then a blog is a powerful tool.

The question is whether that describes your situation. For a solo merchant running a Shopify store with 50 products, probably not. For a brand with a content team or a content partner, absolutely.

For a solo merchant with about 50 products, I would put content time into landing pages, collections, the blog, and product detail pages.

A Shopify blog covers all the extra things you can’t put on the product page. Those extra things are buying guides, how-to and care posts, comparisons between products in the catalog, and the story behind the products, the questions a buyer asks before checking out.

The Best Shopify SEO Strategy

The best Shopify SEO strategy does not rely on any single tactic. Optimize your product pages first. Get your technical SEO clean. Build backlinks through partnerships, PR, and being useful in your industry. Add social proof and user-generated content.

If you have the bandwidth, layer in a blog focused on topics where you can compete. But do not blog just because someone told you Shopify stores need blogs. Blogging because someone said so is how you end up with 50 thin posts that rank for nothing.
