Cats and dogs are treasured pets, and you may have heard of people owning bears and lions, but did you ever think what other animals people have as pets? Check out some of the strangest animals that people have owned.
Kinkajou, aka Honey Bear
A kinkajou may look like a monkey, but they are not related to them. In fact, these nocturnal natives of Central and South America are related to raccoons and red pandas. One famous kinkajou is Stella, who lives in Florida with her owners Samantha and Justin Powell. She spends most of her day sleeping (sounds nice, right?), but in her waking hours, she’s lively and boisterous.
Skunk
Keeping skunks as pets has been a thing for 70 years, and it is legal to own one in 17 states. Skunks are playful and need great care with a fresh diet of lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and cooked grains. They’re known to be mischievous, though, often picking up soft houseware items such as towels. They are de-scented at a young age so their unpleasant smell cannot be sprayed.
Hyena
Believe it or not, people also keep hyenas as pets. A South African couple had a male hyena, Odi, as a pet after he was abandoned by his mother. He seems to have had a good time with his humans while being very hostile towards strangers, and they are now preparing to introduce him to a female hyena and get him a happily ever after of his own. A Florida man had a pet hyena named Jake for a while in his apartment, but couldn’t seem to train Jake well enough to keep him. Eventually, that hyena was brought to a wildlife sanctuary.
Meerkat
Meerkats may be cute, but they are not the ideal house pets. Meerkats typically live in large social groups and they are deeply affected by their group’s absence in a human household. This could be seen in behavioral issues such as constant pacing. Not many people own meerkats as they are banned in the United States, but two pet meerkats, Jack and Mila, are known and live in the UK with their owners.
Stag Beetle
There are many beetles that survive only about three months, but rainbow stags live for about 18 months. You can often purchase adult beetles at a certain time of year, and these stags require special maintenance like a humid enclosure with a place to dig in and a supply of bananas (yes, they love to eat bananas). Writer M.G. Leonard has pet rainbow stag beetles, and has even written children’s books about beetles.
