Why Are Mini Versions So Cute?

Fun-sized.

We’ve all heard the term, and despised it if it was used in reference to our height or some candy. (Who wants less candy?!)

The thing is, we really do love mini versions of things, and this isn’t a new obsession.

Sure, Mini Brands grocery replicas weren’t always a popular children’s toy, but before that, it was dainty dollhouses during the Victorian era.

Whether it’s a mini hand sanitizer, a petite book, or a toy pooch, we’re pretty obsessed with the mini versions of things. Ever wondered why?

Miniature Things Provide a Sense of Control

One unexpected reason we like small versions of things is that mini actually makes us feel more in control. It may sound far-reaching at first, but think about it, smaller items are easy to control. Children learn early on that their mini-universe of tiny toys is one they can control, and tiny versions of things continue to provide a way to cope with the total lack of control everywhere else.

Tiny is Cute

Another thing that draws us to XS versions of things is their sheer cuteness. There’s something so absolutely adorable (regardless of how impractical) about a tiny little purse or book. This example is never more clear than with animals.

There’s a list of characteristics that make animals cute, called kinderschema (or baby schema). Essentially, people find animals the cutest when they have features that make the animal look more like a baby. Size is one of these features, and it also enhances the other features.

Tiny dogs look more like puppies throughout their entire lives and elicit a cuteness level of 100. As a small dog owner, I can personally attest to this, and I can also assure that nobody ever guesses our dogs’ ages correctly.

Mini is More Fun

We like tiny things simply because they are quirky, whimsical, and unique. While there may be some psychological aspects of control and cuteness, we can also just like mini versions for the sheer entertainment value.

No matter what the reasons are for liking mini versions, people will all continue to reach for their personal favorites. However, mini candy bars have got to go because those just don’t make sense.

Thumbs up
